When archaeologist Frank Hamilton Cushing came to the former Calusa settlement on Pine Island in 1896, he marveled at the complex array of at least a dozen mounds, hand-dug canals, and a man-made lake. The Indian city was “so vast,’’ he wrote, “that I could scarcely believe it to have been artificial, wholly the work of human hands.’’
